Why do babies experience hair loss?

Babies can experience hair loss due to various reasons, and it’s typically considered a normal part of their development. Some common reasons for hair loss in babies include:

  1. Telogen Effluvium: This is a temporary condition where a large number of hair follicles enter the resting (telogen) phase of the hair growth cycle at the same time, leading to shedding. It can be triggered by factors such as hormonal changes, stress, illness, or nutritional deficiencies.
  2. Genetics: Some babies may inherit a tendency for hair loss from their parents. This could include conditions like alopecia areata, a condition where the immune system attacks hair follicles, resulting in hair loss.
  3. Friction or Rubbing: Constant friction or rubbing against surfaces such as bedding, car seats, or baby carriers can cause hair to break or fall out, especially in areas where there’s repeated pressure.
  4. Normal Hair Growth Cycle: Like adults, babies go through a natural hair growth cycle that includes periods of shedding. This shedding is typically minimal and occurs as new hair grows in its place.
  5. Medical Conditions: In rare cases, certain medical conditions or treatments may cause hair loss in babies. These conditions may include fungal infections, thyroid disorders, or autoimmune diseases.

It’s essential to note that some degree of hair loss is normal in babies, especially during the first few months of life. However, if you notice excessive or sudden hair loss, or if it’s accompanied by other symptoms such as redness, scaling, or swelling of the scalp, it’s essential to consult a pediatrician for further evaluation and guidance.
