“Postpartum depression,” often referred to as postnatal depression, is a condition that women may experience after childbirth. This condition can arise due to hormonal changes during the postpartum period, sleep deprivation, the responsibilities of new motherhood, and other factors. Symptoms of postpartum depression may include:
- Anxiety or worry
- Feelings of sadness, grief, or low mood
- Rapid anger or irritability
- Insomnia or excessive sleeping
- Changes in appetite
- Lack of interest in oneself and the baby
- Feelings of self-blame
- Difficulty focusing or concentrating
- Feelings of social withdrawal or isolation
- Feelings of abnormal fatigue
- Feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness
These symptoms typically emerge within the first few weeks after childbirth but can sometimes persist longer. Postpartum depression can negatively impact a woman’s overall health, her relationship with her baby, and her daily functioning.
